A First-Hand Point of View From Our Guide

Our guide, Reco, was/still is a first hand “survivor” of Apartheid. I found it really interesting when he told his own stories of his experience’s in rally’s and protests. At one point, I asked him, “Did you ever feel like Apartheid would never end? Did you ever feel like giving up?” His response (direct quote) said: “Yes, because that’s why we did what we did as young people. By protesting, by confronting the police, by asking this to change. And a lotta people always think it was the liberation movement, or it was Nelson Mandela. But that’s not my understanding. People like me every time that we were using a body, that is how were were treated: killed and tortured. That is been more pressure was put on South Africa as well. “

Same History From Robben Island

Most of the history is the same history as Robben Island. The Dutch invaded, then the British.

The Beautiful Architecture and Diffent Styles

One thing that I loved about Cape Town was the architecture. All the fantastic buildings’ styles and shapes. There was one building, a wrecker showed us that had African animals along the sides and showed the history of Cape Town. In typical architecture back in the states, we would have gargoyles or lions or something on the outside. But this was different. My favorite building was the British church. It was very humongous and very, very intricate. There is a statue of Nelson Mandela waving to 10,000 hypothetical people who were there when he was released from jail in Robben Island after 27 years of service. Waco told us he wasn’t there that day because he was in school. But he heard about it from all his friends. One thing that I found very interesting. What is one Rico told us that, where there was a line of trees about 400 yards in front of the big British church, which is where in the old shoreline was. Almost half a mile or even a mile, and then from where the storm was now! I loved walking around and seeing all the different structures and how they were represented.

The Museum

At the end of our tour, Reco Tom us to a the museum. Fun fact about Reco, his wife’s sister wrote a very famous book and she has her own section in a museum in Cape Town. We go to see that we had only 30 minutes to do it, so it was fast meeting, but I was trying to tell you everything that I remember. number one when you win, Ruth, and John, who were all children and their father was taken to jail he is a fighter and fight for his rights. When Emily is eight years old, her father was taken away to jail.
